13th Annual Fly-In
September 28, 2002

by Rick R. Jones

Saturday morning began at the field around 8:00 AM for most of us. The sky was overcast with a 1,000'  ceiling. We finished up field preparations, the cookingPiper PA18-180 Super Cub reaching for the sky. began and everyone kept their eyes on the sky hoping that it would burn off soon.

By our 10:00 AM start time, the sky was looking better, our safety briefing was complete and the crowd was starting to line up for rides so I loaded up my Dad in the Super Cub for the first flight out. I remember thinking that the first ride was short but by the end of the day the pattern seemed just right.  Although I've been involved in all thirteen events, this was my first time hoping rides.

The fly-in was a successful one. We had several unique aircraft to fly in including ultralights, home builts, production aircraft, helicopters and a large turboprop Cessna Caravan. Everybody was safe and the weather cleared for a beautiful afternoon. Thanks to all the members and volunteers for their efforts this year.

The pictures on this page were taken by Louis Branch on his digital camera. If anyone else has some pictures they'd like to include please get them to me. I'd like to have some of the cooks and ground crew hard at work.

Jim Davis flying John Potter's Minimax.

Arriving Extra 300 taxing to a parking spot. East care flew in and was again a hit with the local crowd. We all see them fly over our houses from time to time so it's nice to be able to see the helicopter up close and meet the crew of pilots and flight nurses.

Here's a fine example of home building. The all metal RV6 kit built two seater arrived with the Extra 300. Several of the popular RV series airplanes flew in this year.

Some of the arrivals and drive in traffic. As you can see here the low clouds stayed with us for most of the morning.

Scott Flanagan giving rides in his Stinson 108.

Tim Woolard giving rides in a Dillon's Aviation Cessna 172.

Ken Howard giving rides in his 220 HP Maule.

CFI Taft Stallings giving rides in a new Diamond Eclipse provided by Dillon's Aviation.

Tom Riggs took this shot from the Cessna 150 he was flying while waiting to be loaded with another rider. Thanks to farmer/airport owner Harold Flanagan for providing the cattle gates. They do a great job of keeping the crowd safely away from the moving planes.

Not pictured is one other aircraft that also gave rides. Hilton Carson in his 1945 Piper Cub.
