JUNE 8, 2002 YOUNG EAGLES RALLY

It was a beautiful June morning in Washington, NC (OCW) for the International Young Eagles Day event. The crowd at Warren Field did a great job as host. Jerry Toms and wife Annette of East Carolina Helicopters provided free hot dogs, drinks and cookies for everyone. They also provided space in the FBO for sign-up and ground school classes. We managed to fly 139 kids including several that flew multiple times with different pilots/planes.

Rick Jones matches eager Young Eagles up with pilots Tim Woolard, Doc Johnson and Wes Banks. Other pilots not shown were Carl Bonner, Tom Riggs, Taft Stallings, Wayne Woolard and Brian Wood. Hal Walters did a great job teaching the ground school.

A flight of three Marine CH53 Super Stallion helicopters gave the crowd a fly-by while in transit home. When they transitioned into the area someone called them on the radio and requested a fly-by for the Young Eagles. They gratefully obliged by turning in to down wind and flew the pattern just like one of the Pipers. The kids really thought it was cool. The timing was great as all the planes were on the ground and a ground school class was just letting out.

Two of the Girl Scouts flown Saturday. The eager bunch of young ladies all flew three times each with different pilots and aircraft.
